Our greenery experiences a lot of stress during the summer, especially if it isn’t cared for properly. Summer can get extremely hot, leading to a high rate of evaporation and transpiration. If you don’t provide adequate tree care, trees won’t get enough water and nutrients and will wither and die. Here are the steps you can take to ensure your yard remains healthy and green in summer.
1. Irrigation
During the summer, the weather is warm and dry, meaning your trees won’t get adequate water. They need about one inch of water every week. Do not over-water or under-water, but this recommendation of about an inch a week to ensure they stay healthy through dry weather.
2. Pruning
Pruning is necessary for some tree species to ensure that the little available water is utilized well. It’s also good practice for removing damaged, dead, or diseased branches.
3. Fertilization
Caring for trees isn’t just about water. They also need nutrients, which they may not be able to get when there isn’t water run-off from rain. As you irrigate your yard, you also need to provide nutrients in fertilizers.
4. Mulching
Mulching is the best way to lower the rate of evaporation to ensure your plant roots have enough water. Mulching also kills weeds that compete with your trees for water and nutrients.
5. Pest Control
Pests can attack your trees, whether in summer or spring. You shouldn’t neglect your trees, thinking that these bugs can’t attack them in summer. Some very active summer pests include:
- Spider mites
- Aphids
- Japanese beetles
- Bagworms, and
- Magnolia scale
You can control them through pruning or safe pest control products.
